Are Bifacial Solar Panels Worth It?

Solar technology is a fast evolving technology with a new addition/ modification every day. The solar panels that are the most integral part of a solar system also need to evolve for better and efficient functioning and also to overcome the current limitations. In this article, we will focus on a latest technology solar panel, called Bifacial Solar Panels and discuss its features and advantages over the existing solar panels in the Indian market.

What is Bifacial Solar Panel?

Recently bifacial solar panel technology has been gaining momentum owing to its ability to generate power from both sides. (ऐसा सोलर पैनल, जो दोनों तरफ से बिजली बनता है) The biggest advantage of a bifacial solar panel over a traditional solar module is the higher total energy generation. They either use  dual-glass or clear backsheets.

Benefits of Bifacial Solar Panel

Bifacial solar panels could be the future of the industry and help realize lower LCOE. It generates power from both sides. It has high power density, significant BOS savings, high energy yield, better low light performance and lower temperature coefficient. Bifacial solar panels are fastly gaining market share in India. It will practically double the output given your space restraint.

Super Efficiency - Generate 20% more power
Latest Technology - Halfcut Cells Technology, Make of 9 Bus Bar, 144 German Solar Cells
Rooftop Saving - Occupy 30% less rooftop space and it installs 8 ft. height solar panel stand
Aesthetic Look - It is ideal for farm house, garden, cafeteria, carport, rooftop, etc.
Lifetime warranty - 25 years product life

What is Bifacial Cell?

Bifacial Solar cell design

Bifacial cell can generate from both sides unlike conventional cell structure generating only from front side. Using bifacial cell, bifacial module can generate from front and rear side. With transparent backsheet, bifacial module can get sunlight from rear side instead of front side.

In India, however, it fails to serve its purpose as installers are using monocrystalline panels on both sides and selling it as bifacial. The installers also do not have the sophisticated mounting structure arrangement for bifacial solar panels and use the same mounting structure that is used for normal panels. This does not allow the panel to get sunlight on both the sides. Hence, it has failed in India. The mounting structure used for bifacial panels are more sophisticated and expensive and hence, not commonly used by the masses. It is more popular with the affluent businessmen and is seen atop restaurants, carports and coffee shops, etc.

Limitation of Bifacial Solar Panel

The main challenge with a bifacial solar panel is the unpredictability of the power output. It is highly dependent upon the substrate behind the modules. Also, the mounting structure is not the same as in a conventional module. The installer has to use the appropriate mounting structure for desired output. One has to install these panels on a particular height and angle for better performance.

Bifacial Effect in Real Circumstance

BiFacial Solar Panel can produce additional energy yield dependent of the reflectiveness of the surface. It can generate up to 25% more energy from its rear side with ideal installation conditions.

Installation Areas % Generation
Sodil, Meadows 5.2%
Dirt, Gravel, Concrete 30%
Sand 50%
Snow 70%
White Membrane 85%

Field Test of Bifacial Solar Panels

Bifacial solar panels are tested in different installation conditions and below are performance table of both solar technology solar panels:

Location Installation Area Albedo Monofacial Bifacial Conclusion
Gumi city, Korea Ground Mount Old concrete (21%) 1,213KW 1,440KW 10.5%+
Gumi city, Korea - White membrane (79%) 371KW 464KW 24.8%+
Fremont, California, US - Gravel (18%) 155KW 166KW 6.7%
Boulder City, Navada, US - Dirt (21%), Grass (15%) 566KW 618KW 9.15%

Conclusion

When you are planning to buy solar panel for home and business, you have to must know about technology benefits and limitations. There are lots of solar companies in India that manufactures bifacial solar panels but they don't aware to the customer about bifacial solar panel merit and demerit. So don't worry Loom Solar here for you to decide the best solar panel for your home and business.
