Batteries that have lithium as their anode are called lithium batteries. The charge moves from anode to cathode during the discharge and the charge moves from cathode to anode during charging. Lithium batteries were introduced way back in the 1980s -1990s. These batteries have completely revolutionized to the portable electronics market such as cellular telephones and laptop computers.
What is a Lithium Battery?
Among the developed batteries, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have received the most attention, and have become increasingly important in recent years. Compared with other batteries, LIBs offer high energy density, high discharge power, high coulombic efficiencies, and long service life. These characteristics have facilitated a remarkable advance of LIBs in many frontiers, including electric vehicles, portable and flexible electronics, and stationary applications like BESS.
What are the major components of a Lithium Battery?
A battery consists of several key components: the anode, cathode, separator, electrolyte, and two current collectors (one positive and one negative).
1. Anode and Cathode: These are the electrodes where lithium ions are stored. The anode is typically the negative electrode, while the cathode is the positive electrode.
2. Electrolyte: This is a conductive medium that facilitates the movement of lithium ions between the anode and the cathode. It is usually a liquid or gel-like substance.
3. Separator: Positioned between the anode and cathode, the separator prevents direct electrical contact between them while allowing the passage of lithium ions through it.
4. Current Collectors: These are conductive materials attached to the anode and cathode that collect and transfer electrical current to and from the external circuit.
How Lithium Battery Works?
Let me explain the basic construction of a battery. Lithium Battery is one of the rechargeable batteries. The working and function of a lithium battery is same as any other battery. The battery is a combination of cells. First, we need to know what is a cell. The cell is a closed entity that has 3 components: an Anode, a Cathode, and a Separator. Anode means positive (+) terminals, Cathode means negative (-) terminal, and Separator is a porous membrane that physically separates anode and cathode.
According to our needs, we can connect these cells either in series by connecting the anode of one cell to the cathode of another cell and so on or we can connect the cells in parallel by connecting the anode of all the cells and cathode of all the cell.
Power is defined as the product of voltage and current (P=VxI) rating. This power can be used by connecting a load to the battery and this complete circuit is known as an external circuit. This circuit can either be a DC solution whether we are using a DC load or whether we are using an AC load we can connect the battery using an inverter of a specific rating.
When the load is connected the current flows from the anode to the cathode i.e. positive to negative terminal. Whereas, while charging the polarity is reversed, and the current flows from cathode to anode.

The price of a Lithium Battery is almost two times higher than a lead-acid battery, but in the next 2-3 years, the cost of a Lithium Battery will be at par with Lead-acid batteries.
How is a Lithium Battery different from a Lead Acid Battery?
Lead-acid batteries use plates of lead and lead oxide in a sulfuric acid solution. Commonly used in cars and trucks these batteries are rechargeable. Lead-acid batteries are less expensive, but they have a shorter lifespan and require regular maintenance. Lithium batteries are much more expensive upfront, but they are maintenance-free and have a longer lifespan. The leading popularity of lead-acid batteries is because they are not only dependable but are also very cheap. However, this technology is old and technicians prefer lithium batteries to better suit the purpose, given its higher efficiencies and densities. Lithium batteries are more efficient and charge faster when compared to lead-acid batteries. Lithium is a premium battery technology with a longer lifespan and higher efficiency.

What are the uses of Lithium Batteries?
As already mentioned, lithium batteries are finding an increase in applications in emerging technologies. Solar is already cheaper than coal and this trend is only going to accelerate. However, the biggest problem with solar systems is that they have to be dependent on the electricity grid for storing the excess power generated during the day and drawing power from the grid at night. This is done because the electricity grid acts as a free source of energy storage for solar panel systems. However, the industry soon realized that this is not a feasible option in the long run as utilities are the biggest competitors for solar. Hence, they began to use a self-reliant storage option to support the flawless working of the solar system.

Solar energy plus storage has already gained traction since the economy is driving the faster adoption of solar systems that are paired with lithium batteries. These batteries are very versatile and besides storing energy for the house, they can also be used in wholesale energy markets for providing capacity and frequency regulation. Solar plus storage options with lithium batteries are also being considered as a serious option for islands as they find it cheaper to use solar plus storage instead of shipping expensive and dirty oil/ diesel to provide power to its residents. The remote areas where electricity is not available, such as rural areas, hill stations, small shops, etc. will greatly benefit from these lithium batteries that will be used as a storage option with the environment-friendly solar systems.
Advantage of Lithium Battery over Existing Technologies
1. Logistics
The main benefit of Lithium Battery is its portability, which means we can carry it anywhere we need. We never think about the overflow of acid from the battery. The weight of a Lithium battery is 1/4th of a Lead-acid battery.
2. Fast Charging - Charging within 2 hours.
Lithium batteries charge and recharge much faster than lead-acid batteries. A solar expert's experience is that a Lithium Battery can be charged within 2 hours whereas a Lead Acid battery takes almost 10 hours to charge the full battery. We know that incoming mobile battery charges in a short time and gives a full-day backup.
3. Maintenance Free
Lithium batteries do not require any maintenance to ensure their performance. Few other types of batteries like nickel-cadmium cells require discharge to prevent memory effect. Lithium batteries, on the other hand, have no memory effect which means that they do not have to be completely discharged before recharging.
4. High Efficiency
Lithium batteries offer reliable, stable, long-lasting power. Their energy density is higher, which means they have high power capacity. This high energy density enables its usage in devices that have high power requirements like laptops and mobile phones.
5. Cycle Life - More than 2000 times
These batteries have a lifespan of over ten years on average. It can handle more than 2000 times of charge-discharge cycles.
Lithium batteries are generally smaller and lighter in weight. This is a big advantage that helps its application in various portable electronic devices.
Disadvantages of Lithium Batteries
There are a few major points that may impact the Lithium battery market, such as:
i) Expensive
Though the cost of lithium batteries is constantly falling, it is still higher than that of Nickel-cadmium cells. However, with the large number of applications, progress is being made towards improving the technology and reducing costs.
ii) Inverter Compatibility
At this time, Lithium Battery is used in Automobile and DC Applications. When we talk about Is Lithium Battery Used in Homes? Then I can say - Very Rare Case.
How much does the price of a Lithium Battery?
Lithium battery costs have already fallen by around 60-70% in the last few years and this trend is expected to continue with massive investments, in improving technology and processes. It is estimated that almost 73% of the total lithium battery storage is manufactured in China and the Middle Kingdom has planned to set up many multi-gigawatt plants in the future as well. The cost sensitivity in the Indian market, manufacturers find it very profitable to source batteries from China rather than procuring from the domestic market where there is not much capacity anyway. While China is moving towards high-quality and better-density batteries, they find it useful to dump lower-quality products in India.
How does the price of a Lithium battery vary on technology type?
There are three technologies in the Lithium battery, The oldest one is Lithium-ion, the Current one which is very popular in storage is Lithium Phosphate while Lithium polymer is the technologically advanced battery.

Can You Recycle the Lithium battery?
Yes, lithium-ion batteries are recyclable, but the process can be quite complex. This complexity might explain why finding local recycling centres equipped to handle them can be challenging.
One major issue is that lithium-ion batteries cannot be treated like regular electronic waste. Lithium is a highly reactive element, and improper handling can lead to dangerous situations. For example, mixing lithium batteries with regular paper recycling can be hazardous, as damaged or improperly managed batteries can overheat or even spark a fire. While such incidents are not common, they are becoming more frequent as the use of these batteries grows.
To safely recycle lithium-ion batteries, specialized facilities are required to manage their unique risks and ensure proper processing.
